When in Rome

April 27, 2012

This past week we attended a private cocktail party, sponsored by Gucci and GQ Magazine, at the Gucci store in Phipps Plaza, highlighting the Spring/Summer Men’s Suiting Collection.  The event was beautifully done, and the clothing exquisite.  I knew right away that I wanted to wear something a little more sophisticated than I normally do but still be comfortable, wearing something I’d made or upcycled.

Here’s the rundown:  H&M top and Express belt, eelskin bag from Goodwill, Calvin Klein shoes 75% off at Macy’s, and a couture thrifted/upcycled skirt (I think Armani but I can’t remember).  I found the skirt for around $4 but the waist was very tight, so I cut off the waistband and sewed on a stretchy one.  I opted to wear my favorite silver hoops from TJ Maxx and piled on my collection of silver bangles. (Click on the photos for more detail…sorry they’re so dark)

All in all, mission accomplished.  Only one minor thing: by the time I’d walked from the car to the event, my feet were done. Love the look, though.  Maybe that’s why I only try this on very special occasions.  The rest of the time, I’ll embrace my bohemian tendencies and go barefoot.

Wow, Jean!! You look gorgeous, like a magazine model. Fabulous gams and such a beautiful fitted silhouette. I love how you piled on the bracelets. The perfect look for this event.

I’ve worn most of these bracelets for almost 30 years. They’re my magic/comfort/talisman kind of thing. I always feel better when they’re on; I love them too!! Thank you!

I really like the belt with the rest of your outfit. It really adds a lot. Looks like a fun party!

    • Jean on April 29, 2012 at 12:12 pm

I found that the belt worked perfectly because it covered up the wide stretchy waistband I used when I altered the skirt.

You are the picture of elegance in that outfit – I love that the skirt is a $4 find that you customised!

Thanks so much. I have been making an effort to include thrifted/upcycled pieces everyday, no matter where. I find it a creative challenge that’s satisfying on many levels, artistically, financially, and ecologically.

As usual, I look forward to your blog and what you’re wearing……and I HEAR YOU WITH THE SHOES…..try as I may, I cannot wear heels anymore, and my quest to find semi-low shoes is endless.

    • Jean on April 29, 2012 at 11:55 am

Semi-low shoes are tricky, I think. Sometimes you can get the high heel look, with the semi low comfort, with some of the platforms but most of them don’t work on my feet. The search continues….

You my dear look so chic and elegant!

    • Jean on April 29, 2012 at 11:53 am

It’s fun to play dress up, isn’t it!

Very Chic! Yeah, heels are fine if you’re going to be sitting and being decorative, but not practical if you’ve got to stand or walk around – they do look great on you though.

I have a friend who calls them limousine shoes. The problem is, I think I’ve been in a limo maybe twice in my life. The notion of being “decorative” is a whole topic worthy of much contemplation and discussion. In this instance, I think the bottom line for me was summed up in the title of the post. :-)

You look smashing! I’m very impressed that this is mostly upcycled stuff and that you wore it to Gucci. You may or may not know that I’m doing this Window Shopping Project this year trying to screw up the courage to even walk IN to some of the higher end stores. I’m trying to break in a new, but thrifted pair of heels as I type.

I get intimidated as well, often because I feel like I should be dressed like I’m buying, even if I’m not. Since I don’t usually dress like that…! I want to go in more often, though, to research fabrics, construction etc. and to try things on. This year especially, I can’t figure out what silhouettes to experiment with. If I stick with the credo “flaunt what you’ve got left”, and that being a moving target these days, it might be shorter (to the knee) skirts which I’ve never worn a lot. Sounds like a fashion challenge for the easily bored, i.e. me.

I smiled at the vision of you typing as you break in a pair of shoes. If you’re like me, you had on pumps with your pajamas.

Jean, you simply exude elegant glamour in this whole outfit – though it’s not just down to what you’re wearing, it’s also in your whole inner, smiling confidence

I felt great that evening, despite the pinching shoes. Glad you didn’t see me wincing.

    Very elegant!

    • Jean on April 29, 2012 at 9:11 pm

Merci beaucoup! (Somehow that sounds better, doesn’t it?)

I’m in love with that eelskin bag, its fabulous. In fact I would most definitely wear your entire outfit, so classic and sophisticated-but you’ve added your own bohemian twist with all the silver jewellery.Great figure too!

It was fun to carry the bag. It felt very “lady-like”, which is not my usual modus operandi. I tend to be more casual or hippie-inspired, but I couldn’t resist the lovely construction of this bag at the thrift store. I knew I’d use it some day!

Such beauty! The entire outfit is stunning and everything flows perfectly. Sometimes the shoes are worth it for a short time when you can look as good as you do.

    • Jean on April 30, 2012 at 10:33 pm

I’m willing to suffer just a little. I really love high heels, actually. Usually it’s boots, but I do have some summer heels that are fun to wear. Sometimes the outfit just deserves a great shoe!

Oh my gosh! I can’t believe you got those shoes 75% off, I paid full price for them a few years ago!

    • Jean on May 2, 2012 at 7:22 pm

Do they hurt your feet too?

  13. LaJuandrea on May 6, 2012 at 9:00 pm

I love that vintage bag. I love those Belle stone bags.

    • Jean on May 6, 2012 at 9:51 pm

I’m not familiar with Bellestone. I just googled them, however, and I saw some gorgeous vintage bags on ebay!
