The Ode Series, #1

March 14, 2012

Because I’ve been inspired over the last few years by some exceptional personal style bloggers, I’ve decided to create a series of posts, The Ode Series, with outfits directly inspired by some of my style icons.  On the surface, my icons provide me with fresh ideas on how to utilize my existing wardrobe; I love seeing the creativity and joy expressed through clothing.  But deeper than this, they show me how creativity, art, and Spirit are all intertwined. In discovering them, my life is enriched in many powerful ways.

It’s entirely appropriate that my first ode is devoted to the Style Crone, aka Judith Boyd.  I discovered her blog early on and was immediately affected, not only by her fashion flair and creativity, but by her personal story.  Even as she navigated the unspeakable pain of her husband’s terminal illness and subsequent death, she would post with courage, beauty, and truth.

As she moves forward, she continues to light the way.  I am deeply grateful she has been willing to share her journey with such incredible graciousness and humanity, and yes, style.

My hat’s off to you, my dear friend.  I love you, and happy birthday!

(For those of you unfamiliar with the Style Crone, she is the deity of hats.  As a tribute to her for this Ode post, I made a hat from upcycled materials, and paired it with a vintage coat I thrifted 30 years ago and just recently redesigned with thrifted materials.  The skirt, top, and cowl scarf were likewise thrifted and upcycled.  If you click on the photos once or even twice, you can see them in more detail.)

The color of your Judith-inspired hat is fantastic! I am very impressed.

Thanks! It just kind of came together, the way upcycled things often do, based on what materials I had on hand. I think I got lucky with the colors too!

You genius milliner! Incredible styling, all those scraggling bits hanging down fabulously in an organic tangle of colour and texture. In the first photo I adore that kimono-feeling maxi jacket in those jewel blues. You look absolutely regal in these photos. What a beautiful tribute. I hope you wear this hat when you go out! Do you sell them?

      PS Happy birthday!!

      • Jean on March 14, 2012 at 10:21 pm

        Thank you!!

The hat has a life of it’s own, which I love. The pieces are actually wool remnants from the Pendleton outlet in Portland OR, and every time you put it on, it hangs differently. It can hang long or coil around the crown of the hat, with any number of pieces hanging at different lengths. I just made it this weekend for the post, and since it was 80 degrees here today, I was barely able to keep it on during the photo shoot. I intend to wear it if it ever gets cool enough!! As far as selling them, uh, this is the only one I’ve ever made. Maybe down the road.

Jean, I’m speechless and very touched by your words and by the crown of beauty that you created and wear with elegance. I love that it has movement and that it hangs differently at the drop of a hat. I feel very honored to be the recipient of your eloquent ode, and humbled. Your talent is endless as evidenced by the upcycled pieces you wear with the headwear.

Love to you on your birthday!

And thank you as well. Here’s to many, many more!

What a fine tribute to the lovely Judith and such a fabulous outfit, too. I love those colours and that coat is absolutely wonderful.
    Happy Birthday for yesterday. xxx

What a stunning ‘ode’. I especially like your up-cycled hat (being a fan of all things hat related). But the combination of colours and layers is rather glorious too.

    • Jean on March 16, 2012 at 6:54 pm

I was startled when I saw the photos because I hadn’t really realized how much I loved all the colors together, too. Part of my joy in upcycling is combining the disparate “unloved” pieces and creating something totally unplanned. This combination was truly a surprise.

Yes, I was trying to salute her style! I’ve already got a few more “Odes” up my sleeve; can’t wait to try them out.

My weekend is going well! I’ve been thrifting and sewing. For me, it doesn’t get much better than that, recreationally speaking.

As I’m struggling over what to pack for a trip, I loved your post about “home”. I keep reminding myself to just take what I love, and don’t worry about the rest. Your version of home is different from mine, but I love the way it looks on you!!
