Summer Slouch

Another day, another outfit!  Today it was all about volume, obviously.  Give me the least constricting, most comfortable items possible, add a few accessories and step out the door.  There’s something about wearing things I’ve made/upcycled that satisfies me.  I don’t necessarily think they’re brilliant all the time, but at least they’re unique and have integrity, if that makes sense.  They’re not mass produced and soul-less, and that makes me feel good.

This top was made from thrifted t-shirts.  I’m anxious to find the time to make some more.  The skirt was upcycled a few times, with one mistake leading to another refashion.

The woven bag was thrifted with Feda (did I already mention that?) and the bracelets were gifts from Lynx.

My trip was good; I’ll be back out at the end of the month as well.  I think I managed to pack wisely, although by the time I got home I was bored with my selections.  It’s wonderful to play in my closet in the meantime.

Thanks for stopping by!  I didn’t expect to post but couldn’t resist a little place-holder.  When I’m off the grid I miss you, old friends and new!   (Thank you Shawna for your recent comment labeling my style as “elegant bohemian”…it was a lovely affirmation at just the right time.)

Thank you ALL for your generosity, creativity, and wonderful energy!!

Until the next time… XXOO

Details: skirt and top-upcycled from thrifted items, hat-DSW, earrings and bag-Goodwill, flip flops-can’t remember, all other jewelry-thrifted and gifted

Also, remember you can click on the pictures once and then again for a close up view.

I am better at labeling you than I am myself, apparently but I’m glad you like it and you have just confirmed it’s suitability by showing this fantastic upcycled tee shirt top. I am pretty certain you could put on garbage bags and make us all envious! I’m not sure if it’s your wardrobe or your brain that I want to steal. 😉

See, you did it again. Thank you for the compliments!!

Hi Jean! I was missing your posts and instagrams but life must take priority. I’m loving the altered t shirt top and the placement of the details. I’ve been making some pillow slip covers and bought a pattern for a maxi dress and skirt but I get frustrated in the sea of ugly patterns and fabrics. I rarely see a fabric in the stores I truly love. Maybe I’m in the wrong fabric store!

    Hope you enjoy your weekend!

    • Jean on June 14, 2014 at 12:48 pm

I feel you! I think one of the reasons I started upcycling/refashioning was because the yardage I liked was expensive and I was scared to cut it. I don’t have the patience to make a prototype out of cheaper fabric. I’m getting ready to check out Marcy Tilton patterns though, and there are a few blogs that might help with resources. Check out Margy at and Pao at They have links and info that might help.

Getting ready to sew today! Should be a good weekend. Hope you have a good one as well.

You look put together no matter what! I pretty much agree with everything you said, except I often go without any accessories (yikes). Thanks for the mention too. Marcy Tilton patterns are way cool. Note they usually run big for the size. Keep on sewing. So glad you checked in for a bit. Take care.

    • Jean on June 14, 2014 at 2:14 pm

It’s funny! I am heading out the door as soon as I type this, looking for those patterns!! Running big is good; I like my slouch. :-) You don’t need accessories!! Your designs have them perfectly built in. XXOO

Another upcycling masterpiece! Yes, elegant bohemian is a very apt description for you! I love the way you wear hats – this jaunty little red one just sets off the outfit perfectly. Glad you enjoyed your trip away xx

    • Jean on June 15, 2014 at 12:54 am

This hat turns up regularly, as does it’s white counterpart. I have a hard time finding hats that fit, so once I do, I wear them a lot. Hope you’re well!! Are you back to work? One of these days I want to go to Andalucia too!! Always love your posts. XXOO

    Elegant bohemian is wonderfully apt.
Glad you’re back safely and hope you’re rested and well. You look fab! xxx

‘Unique and with integrity': not just a description of your fabulous up-cycled clothes, but of YOU!
Brilliant sleeves on your top, part cape, part batwing. You are all about languid elegance – as well as elegantly bohemian.

    • Jean on June 16, 2014 at 2:02 pm

Ooh, I love the word languid too. It’s so easy to think of slightly pejorative adjectives (baggy comes to mind) so any positive substitutes are most welcome! XXOO

Jean, you always look elegant, and give your clothes your own twist, so Shawna’s description is perfect. Love the top (definitely make more!) and of course you wear hats with stunning panache! Glad you had a good trip. xxx

It was a good trip, with a lot going on. I’m not sorry to head north during the summer, that’s for sure!! I’ll be back in New England in two weeks and hopefully it’ll still be temperate. It’s already sitting in the low 90’s here and very, very humid. Gah.

I love a bit of slouch as well :-)
Can’t wait to see what you whip out next! Loving Marcy Tiltin patterns on Pao, so sure you will look fabulous.
Thanks for giving us a placeholder peek. XO

Please do steal it! I’d love to see what you make.

Nice to see you – this outfit is sooo perfectly coordinated! I’m always intrigued by the way you upcycle clothing into something fabulously cool – the top is amazing, and I think you should make a couple more.

    • Jean on June 16, 2014 at 2:08 pm

Thank you Shelley!!! I’m hoping to turn out a few pieces in the next two weeks before I head out again. I’ll probably have them up on IG before I’m able to post again. Looking forward to seeing you there!!

elegant bohemian!, sounds like a delightful way to describe your style, love it!, and also love how gorgeous you look (particularly) when wearing hats!, and all those pretty bijouterie!!
Your diy top looks comfy and casual, with interesting shape and colors!, so inspiring!

    • Jean on June 18, 2014 at 1:50 am

I can see you in a similar top, maybe in purples and greens ? You always have an extraordinary way with color. Love that!!

Elegant Bohemian! Plus glamour! You can make any outfit shine with your golden touch. Your thrifted bag pulls everything together. It’s always amazing to me how your can take a few thrifted pieces and transform them into splendor. But then your blog title says it all – Dross Into Gold! XO

    • Jean on June 18, 2014 at 11:39 am

Your comment just made my day. :-) Love you!!

Shawna’s description truly captures the essence of your style, Jean! But then again, I think I would enjoy looking at you in any kind of clothes. You are just one of these amazing women whose beauty shines from within!

    • Jean on June 24, 2014 at 6:36 pm

So sweet, thank you! I did have to smile though, because of the phrase “any kind of clothes”. Considering how carefully I tend to make my selections, the image of me in some of the things I don’t choose could be very amusing. Could also be fun though…hmmm :-)

  14. Glenda on June 25, 2014 at 12:58 am

Oh I really dig this look Jean. The skirt rocks, and I love the color blocking combo!

    • Jean on June 25, 2014 at 9:30 am

      :-) !!

  15. Feda on June 26, 2014 at 9:09 pm

so glad you are getting use out of that beautiful bag! I definitely think you are the epitome of elegant bohemian! stunning! I love how you pull off the skirt and hat! I can so relate to the soul less comment about clothing. It must be wonderful to put something together yourself and work it!!
