A few weeks ago I went to Las Vegas with Joey, who was performing at a private fundraiser there. I’d never been, so I decided to find out what all the fuss was about. If you’re a gambler, it’s definitely a foreshadow of heaven. However, I like to have something to show for my quarters, so I looked for thrift stores instead. Although I didn’t make it this round, my computer told me there were 17 stores in a 2 1/2 mile radius. The sweet sound of angels is still ringing in my ear.
Because I wanted to compliment the (very stunning!) linen sport coat he was wearing that night, I went to a fabric store before we left and purchased enough make a two piece dress. The trim came from a thrifted saree in my stash.
This skirt is one of my favorite silhouettes, easy to make and drapes beautifully, along with the top. I’ve made them countless times and never get tired of the look.
Add on some vintage clip-on earrings and some rings acquired in a clothing swap, and I was good to go.
Plus I have enough fabric to make a Better-than-Infinity scarf!
I had a ball on that trip and definitely won big, in that I have something to show for it. Heaven can wait until next time. Hope you’re getting a taste of your version of heaven these days. XXOO
Details: 2 piece rayon lycra dress: designed and made by me, silk trim: thrifted, earrings: flea market, rings: Buffalo Exchange. Finally, the backdrop: my empty-nester bedroom-turned-dressingroom extravaganza.
Gorgeous!!
Thank you Linda!! Have a great weekend. XXOO
Let me get this right……..YOU went to VEGAS and found zero thrift shops but found a fabric store and whipped this STUNNING outfit up in VEGAS?YOU are STUNNING!
Plus, I learned a NEW word………I have NEVER heard DROSS before! Can you believe that?MY 55 years of LIVING!
You have taught me something already!!
XX
Oh no! There’s some confusion here! Yes, I went to Vegas. Before I went, I made the dress. When I got there, I searched on-line for thrift stores in the area. There were many close to where we were staying but I never had a chance to go. Hopefully that clears up any questions, although I hope I haven’t disappointed you!
Isn’t dross a great word? Glad you like words too. XXOO
Wow! Red and purple. Zing!
Your poppies (?) complemented his checks so well. What a beauty that jacket is. He knows how to dress!
Your outfit shapes look so simple and elegant. Loooove the trim!!
And once again your jewellery is envy making. Xo Jazzy Jack
It’s funny because I typically gravitate to black for dressier stuff, or turquoise, so I didn’t have anything I wanted to wear that would maximize those potential photo ops, haha! (Never did get any good shots from the actual event.) I enjoyed making and wearing it, though. Yes, he does know how to dress.
Glad you like the jewelry, too. I can’t resist silver. XXOO
What a gorgeous dress! The pattern on the fabric you chose is so beautiful. You look stunning!
bisous
Suzanne
Thanks lovely! So sorry I missed meeting you in Vancouver! You got to hang out with some of my favorite bloggers, too. Hopefully next time! XXOO
Wow, what an exciting fabric. Cannot wait to see what you have made with it. It is really beautiful on you. (What isn’t?)
Greetje
You are so kind! I love the fabric too. The 2 pc dress you see in the pics was created recently. I like that style because I can wear them as separates too. XXOO
That is one incredible creation, the colours are amazing! I bet you outshone the neon lights of Vegas. You’ve got me in the mood for creating something now, thank you! xxx
Can’t wait to see what you make!! I’m sorry I haven’t been visiting your part of the world; I miss you. Thank you for staying in touch. I’d still love to Skype sometime, though! XXOO
Jean, the colours and pattern of that fabric are just gorgeous, and I’m sure you and Joey looked splendid together! I have been to Vegas once and am not a gambler but I managed to find all kinds of other fun things to do there – indoor skydiving, backstage showgirl tour, etc. If I go again I will definitely look for thrift stores.
Yeah, I thought we looked good!
Indoor skydiving sounds terrifying…I’ll go thrifting, thank you. XXOO
Gorgeous outfit, the pattern and colours , the perfect compliment for the jacket. I like the sound of your empty nester bedroom turned dressing room, something I am about to work on.
Having that room is a joy!!! I still have a single bed in there, set up as a day-bed of sorts, in case we need the extra bedroom. I love to sit in there, daydreaming/reading/talking on the phone etc. I use scarves, hats, and shelves of shoes as decor. LOVE IT. Have fun with yours!!!
Glamour is the name that fits for this gorgeous two piece dress. Although you wearing it is what really makes it come to life. How exciting that I had to chance to see you in this beautiful garment here in Denver! Your sewing skills always amaze me.
I love how your dress compliments Joey’s linen sport jacket. The two of you must have been a vision at the event in Vegas. And I’m sure that you will never forget about the 17 thrift stores in the area. That does sound like a little piece of heaven!!! xoxoxo
Are you planning a trip to Vegas now? I bet there are a lot of finds! Let me know.
Jean that dress is gorgeous! The colours are stunning and I always fall for big loose flower prints. And softly draping fabrics! Perfection.
Thanks Shawna! It was fun to step out of my default color/pattern choices and try something different. I loved it.
Hope all’s well in your world. XXOO
What a couple you would have made – jaws dropping, drinks spilling as you walked past. I love how you thought to put together your sari bits with this fabric to create something stunning and so uniquely and fabulously you. I’ve never been to Vegas either but would love to hang out and watch people walk by. Seventeen thrift stores all within reach? How did you make it out of there?!
It’s great to see you sewing up a storm and causing style havoc (the good kind!) wherever you go, Jean. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
You definitely need to be a director; I like the scene you envision, haha! The people watching was somewhat uneventful, actually. Lots of shorts and t-shirts, with the occasional body-con dress here and there. You’d slay them for sure. Believe me, if I’d had the time, I would’ve had to buy another suitcase to get home. Maybe the next meet-up should be there?
Jean, what amazing fabric! Those giant pansies are stunning – just like you! A really lovely creation, typically you in construction but a departure in terms of the wild print, I think.
All those thrift stores in Las Vegas? I’m not fussed about gambling but I like the sound of the secondhand shopping opportunities – next blogger meet-up, maybe?! Xxx
Yes, I just proposed that to Melanie!! Can you come?!!
Your version of heaven is very heavenly, especially on you – I’d bet on you any day!
So kind!! What’s your slice of heaven look like? XXOO
Love how the dress compliments your man’s blazer–I love when couples wear clothing
that shows their “style solidarity”. Lol. I think it’s a fun, flirty way to be together! My husband
and I like to do this whenever we are lucky enough to go somewhere cool. Of course, I draw
the line at matching sweaters, ha! But that’s just me. I’ve got a few more years before I get
to take over my son’s bedroom, but I’m looking forward to a bedroom sized dressing room,
for sure! Xo. :)) jewel
In general, I don’t try to match but occasionally compliment, as you say. We both like to wear a lot of black, so I rarely think about it most of the time. As for the bedroom turned dressing room, it’s such a luxury! I enjoy sleeping in that room too, when I’m on my own…very cozy.
Jean! What a beauty you’ve created with maximum poppy-iness. Oh, You were missed in Vancouver. Have you heard Anne of Spy Girl is planning the next one for LA in Dec. of 2016. I’ve forgotten the actual dates, mid-Dec. I believe, to coincide with her art exhibition. First time she’ll be showing her fashion icons! I’m planning to go. I hope you’ll be there too. If not, you’ll just have to visit Chicago. Do you know they have a weekend of free Jazz every Labor Day Weekend at Millennium Park that brings in 2 million visitors. Joey and you should be there, right?
I’m sorry I missed so much fun in Vancouver!!! However I’ll do my best to be at Anne’s event; it sounds fabulous. I’ve never been to Chicago, so I may have to come that way sooner than later. Any city that has a giant free jazz weekend is alright in my book! XXOO
Couldn’t use “wow” or “amazing” cause everyone who got here first used those. Let me think … how about FREAKING GLORIOUS! I’ll bet Joey was so glad to parade you on his arm! Brilliant work, as always, Jean.
I was just killed ’cause I couldn’t go to Vancouver. But I’ve gotten over my big pout and had a nice hiatus. So glad to see you looking like such a glamazon again. This hasn’t been the easiest year or so has it!
With all my admiration, and as always with affection!
So good to hear from you! Thank you for such lavish compliments.
Yes, the past couple of years have been, shall we say, special? I’m still trying to regain my equilibrium, but it’s getting a little easier. I hope you’re well!!!! Sending much love. Xo
