Gifts

I’ve been thinking a lot about gifts and just looked up “gift” in the dictionary.  It’s a beautiful word, with many variations in meaning.  I even like the legal definition: The voluntary transference of property without anything in return.

I have a distinct memory of being 5 years old or so, taking some of my toys and wrapping them in yellow school paper tied with scraps of green yarn.  I gave these to various (and I might add random) kids in the neighborhood.  I just liked the way the packages looked and felt;  it was fun to give them away.

I also remember, about the same time I’m guessing, stealing a silver dollar off my father’s bureau, putting it in a little white box with cotton inside, and presenting it to my Sunday school teacher.  Clearly there was a lesson there, which I’m pretty sure I learned quickly, thanks to the wisdom of the teacher and my parents!

The pictures in this post are some of the gifts I have received over the last few years from my daughter-in-law Lynx.  She designed and made these exquisite pieces.  I wear them constantly.  But beyond this is the creative energy and inspiration she has brought into my life.  Oh yeah, did I mention she’s also the mother of my grandson? How lucky can you get! I made the jewelry tree out of a vase from Goodwill and branches from my backyard.

As the recipient of so many gifts, of all kinds, from so many sources, I  just want to say THANK YOU!!!

I intend to pass it on.  Got any green yarn?

Your post made me think of gifts. The kind I like best are the unexpected ones, even something as small as getting a compliment from a stranger while walking down the street can put a positive spin on the rest of my day. I do street style photos too and the joy I sometimes see on my subjects’ faces has the same impact – that whole thing about giving being better than receiving. As long as the circle keeps going around. Good post.

Oooooh! This post is soooo touching. Thank you mama Jean!!! You teach me about giving gifts… and about being able to receive them too! Half the fun of giving is watching the receiver LOVE what you gave! Especially when you have made the item! Your graceful and whole-hearted receiving of my art work has given me such gifts right back. I love you, I love this blog…. and I love your son and grandson!!!
