From the Mouths of Babes

June 15, 2012

I have a friend who frequently visits her grandmother next door; my friend is three years old.  She likes to sit behind the wheel of our car and drive to church and Mexico.  Again and again.  This morning as I headed out to run errands I heard, “Miss Jeannie!  Where are you going?”  I said, “To the bank!”  She responded, “Miss Jeannie, why are you all dressed up?”  To which I replied, “I try to dress up every day.  It makes me happy.”  She paused.  Then she said, “Miss Jeannie!  I like your hat!”   She made my day.

Details of the “all dressed up” outfit include:  hat, Luna Rosa leather sandals, batik patchwork bag, green wooden bracelet, Eskandar cotton shirt- all thrifted.  Leather leaf earrings by Lynx, and the patterned wooden bracelet was created by Alex.  The skirt is from Macy’s several years ago.  I have to confess that when my friend saw me I was wearing flip flops.  I put on the heels for these photos because I love them and rarely wear them.  The flip flops probably made more sense, however.

Also, the things that I love about these particular pieces don’t necessarily show up in the pictures.  For example, the wide, cropped shirt from Eskandar is a delicious smooth cotton.  The stripes are a subtle gray and white, with the tiniest red line in the middle.  It’s slightly longer in the back and when it’s askew, it looks even better.  I really didn’t capture that at all.  I will also re-think the skirt.  The length is awkward but it’s one of those pieces that’s just so comfortable.  It’s a lovely pale yellow which looks so nice with the gray, but I’m not sure the pluses outweigh the minuses.  Oh well, win some, lose some.

At least my hat was a hit!

P.S.  I’m linking up with Patti  and  Monday Mingle this week!  Hope to see you there!

It’s got to be one of the coolest, most comfortable things I own for summer. I’ve been enjoying it for 5 years now!

    Hi Jean,
Your neighbor sounds precious. I remember sitting behind the wheel and make believing going to the zoo, etc…
Love the fabric of that bag. It reminds me of Patti’s recent skirt on her blog. And I love that style of hat. I took mine from my son. 😉

    • Jean on June 16, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Without a doubt, this is my favorite style of hat. I’m heading over to Patti’s to check out the skirt!

Sorry, I’m not seeing the “lose some” part of this outfit at all. You look fabulous. I can just see you behind the wheel of your convertible. Your writing here made the scene come alive – what a touching exchange with your friend. Your choice of bag, all firecracker colour, is an inspired counterpoint to the pastels. Eskander?! I almost daren’t look at those clothes in the store – they are so beautiful. Excellent find.

I have thrifted three Eskandar pieces over the years. The shirt in this post, an incredible waxed linen coat, and just recently a heavy linen hooded top that zips up the front. The proportions are always very oversized (not sure if they’re from the 80’s)and the fabrics are exquisite.

There is nothing awkward about that skirt! It’s my favourite length – long enough to be easy to move around in without showing off more than you wish to and short enough not to trip over it when walking. Wear with pride!

    • Jean on June 16, 2012 at 12:48 pm

You’ve hit upon all the pluses. I’ll take it under advisement!

oooh, your friend is right, the hat is really cool and I love the bangles too!

    • Jean on June 16, 2012 at 11:35 pm

I usually wear my silver bangles, but occasionally (especially when it’s hot) I like to switch up. Glad you like them.

I love the way you live the attire, ahhhhhhhhhhhh.
have a lovely weekend, my friend

I’m inspired by how you deal with the Andalusian heat!!

It is a lovely hat! I used to wear hats alot when I was younger and found they were always a talking point for others when you wore them!

    • Jean on June 16, 2012 at 11:34 pm

I hope you haven’t given up on them! I stopped for a long while and only recently have begun to wear them frequently. I’m beginning to feel incomplete without one.

The world of being three is such a delight with all those delicious questions to ask (all the time). I’m not surprised your tiny friend was impressed by your outfit and hat – it’s relaxed but glamourous – a great combination.

In general, I like hanging out with children and older folks. Somehow their perspective on life suits me better.

Your sweet friend next door will soon be wearing a hat! She already has good taste, as the hat that your wearing with leopard print band is a beauty. The patterned wooden bracelet by the talented Alex plays well with your colorful bag! I think this is a great outfit for errands, and have never seen you in a ‘lose some.’

    • Jean on June 17, 2012 at 9:31 pm

Good thing you don’t see me every day :-). I definitely have some fashion-victim moments that aren’t posted! But Joey and I agree that “just look like you care” pretty much sums it up. At least I enjoy trying (and thank you!!).

Miss Jeannie, I love this outfit and you look great! And that hat is amazing! Isn’t it something how one nice comment can make us feel so good? That is the perfect reason to give someone too, when they ask “why are you so dressed up?” Because it makes us feel good. :-)

    • Jean on June 17, 2012 at 9:32 pm

To paraphrase the amazing Vix, a day without dressing up is a day wasted. Let’s play!!

I’m glad your young friend can recognize style. I like your point about some great outfits don’t necessarily translate well in the photos. The touch of the fabric and the subtle hues that show better in real life. Your pictures do translate the cool comfort of your outfit, and everything is better when worn with a hat. Let’s go to the bank!

    • Jean on June 17, 2012 at 9:37 pm

Blogging and looking at outfit photos is definitely an eye opening experience. Sometimes things you swear are fabulous don’t really look that great, but you love them anyway. Sometimes how you feel is more important than how you look. Hopefully you can have both most of the time.

  12. Jeannie on June 17, 2012 at 10:29 pm

    Loving your photos Jean!!
What a wonderful outfit! I can definitely see myself in this…except the hat. I look hideous in hats. :( You wear them so well!
    I think I adore your wooden bangles…I want! :)

    • Jean on June 18, 2012 at 12:07 am

I’m guessing you haven’t tried the right hats! Try pulling all your hair back into a ponytail or bun, and see what happens. I have to believe that a fedora would look great on you! Try it at an angle, with the brim over one eye. Make sure you wear it low enough so the crown isn’t too tall. Experiment and see what style works for you. You’ve definitely got the right attitude for hats, you just haven’t found the right one!!

  13. Tamera on June 18, 2012 at 8:39 am

I love the whole outfit!! It looks so breezy and cool for a summer day.
I wish more people dresed up when they went out. My eyes would appreciate it!! Think!

  14. Forest City Fashionista on June 18, 2012 at 10:58 am

I love it when kids comment on something I’m wearing – they haven’t developed a filter yet, so they just say exactly what they think! That is a great hat for summer, and it suits your outfit as it balances out the volume of the skirt and top.

  15. Vix on June 18, 2012 at 11:22 am

That little girl sounds like a fine judge, you look fantastic, there’s so many pretty details and interest in your outfit. I know what you mean about the skirt, it looks great but maybe you could add a tier in a contrasting colour to make it more “you”. xxx

  16. WendyB on June 18, 2012 at 11:28 am

    I like your friend!

  17. Terri on June 18, 2012 at 9:58 pm

Do you know what’s cool about this post? It makes the point that the effort you make is having an impact on someone of a younger generation. May she grow up to dress up EVERY day.

I can understand your young friends fascination with your beautiful red sports car!

  19. Sheila on June 20, 2012 at 6:03 am

Miss Jeannie, I like your hat too! Oh, and that racy little red convertible.

  20. ariane on June 20, 2012 at 12:32 pm

    Hi Jean!

Aren’t little kids precious! Love them, love their questions – I love your answer to Why do you dress up – Because you say it makes me happy – Makes me happy too to dress up – More people should dress up, maybe there would be more smiles in the subway and bus i take every morning – I know i make some people happy in the morning while riding the bus and subway! Love your hat as well – i have something similar – so versatile!

    Take care lovely

    Ariane xxxx

This is such a lovely post. I read it a while ago and am surprised that I hadn’t commented yet. What an adorable little friend you have and what a great ‘lesson’ you are teaching her. Dressing is not just about about. You do it mainly for yourself, because as you say: It makes you have. This is a wonderful relaxed outfit and i adore that hat!

  22. josep-maria on June 23, 2012 at 7:36 am

A simple, but nice outfit. I love the shirt and hat. The bag is … fantastic.

  23. Terri T on June 29, 2012 at 1:40 pm

This is just one of many wonderful outfits that we’ve seen you in. Accessories are so important to an outfit and I absolutely love the hat and earrings in this pic. Your sense of style has truly impacted your little neighbor and her older sister to the point that if they don’t see you on any given day, they ask “Did you see Miss Jeannie, Was she dressed up, What did she have on?”. Your style doesn’t conform to that of society which makes you stand out, especially to the babes….Can’t wait to see more.

That skirt length is difficult for me as well.
