Friends and Family

August 6, 2016

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” and that pretty much sums up the past few months over here.

At the end of February, a close friend of mine went on life support due to complications from the flu.  She didn’t come home for 7 1/2 weeks.

My 93 year old mother fell 6 times in two months. Fortunately, she didn’t break any bones; we just ended up in the ER while she got stitches over her eye.

The really good thing is that they are both doing well and I can sleep again.

Now for the BEST OF TIMES!!!

At the beginning of July I traveled across the country to meet my new granddaughter.  Her brother is enamored, like the rest of us.  Spending time with my son and his family was exactly what I needed.

Just prior to this trip, I had the extreme pleasure of catching up with Jean and Valerie (the Idiosyncratic Fashionistas) in NY, along with artist Carol Markel. The wonderful instagrammer @artfulcitystyle also joined us. It’s difficult to remember who laughed the loudest, especially after the complimentary mimosas were served.  (Jean arrived moments after this photo was taken.)

After brunch, the IF’s and I walked to East Village Hats where I tried on the hat of my dreams.

Later that weekend I spent an hour with Lynn, the Accidental Icon.  The conversation was fascinating, ranging from her blog and where it’s headed, to what it’s like to work in academia, plus shopping haunts and cars.  Both of us have partners who are Car Nuts, and believe me, it’s a genus unto itself.

One minor thing she mentioned in passing was the concept of a statement piece (an example being her stunning Commes Des Garcons apron).  I’m not sure why it resonated at that particular moment, but I found myself remembering it when I stumbled across THIS AMAZING PIECE at Cargo, a global emporium in Portland OR.

I was told that it’s a vintage piece from Laos.  All the dense embroidery is done by hand, and the indigo fabric is soft and worn.  I’d never seen this style of garment, either.  If Lynn hadn’t uttered those fateful words, I probably would’ve left it behind because of my budget.

However, I’m glad I didn’t.  It was the perfect piece to wear in Denver while I caught up with Judith, aka Style Crone.

My husband was performing at the Keystone Wine and Jazz Festival, an annual event in the Rocky Mountains near Denver.  Judith was not only able to attend, she orchestrated a photo session with her fabulous photographer Daniel at the helm.  My upcycled kimono-esque top coincidentally echoed the colors she chose to wear as well!

Now that I’m home, the summer continues at breakneck speed, what with hosting a mini family reunion, taking care of Mom (and Joey), work, plus trying to squeeze in a little sewing time.  However, the only thing I would change right now is the extreme heat.  It’s exhausting, but at least I got this post done!!!

Thanks for sticking with me.  Until next time…xoxoxo

For those who are visiting for the first time, welcome!!  I typically try to give more details about the clothing but I ran out of energy here.  Maybe next time.

Also, I’ve just run over to Patti’s Visible Monday and Judith’s Hat Attack.  Hope to see you there!!

How wonderful to hear from you, Jean! What a beautiful post with stunning photos of your friends and family. The little one is the most adorable – welcome to this world! I am glad that the accidents with your Mom and friend all taken care of, and they are doing well now. It must be hard for you.

Your outfit is fantastic! I love this vintage piece. I wonder whether Olga of Local Fashion would know more about it – she is very knowledgeable in the field of Asian folk clothing. I love that you combine it with fabulous hats and leopard print dress. Lovely to see all your reunions, and I just have to say – I have the same orange sandals as Judith. Feeling pretty special. :)

We have just came back from the Oregon Coast. I figured you wouldn’t be back there so soon. Maybe next year! :)

    Sending my warmest wishes!

Lovely to hear from you, and YES!! The next time I’m on that side of the world I’d love to see you. I’ll definitely reach out to Olga; great suggestion. Also, I’m not surprised you and Judith have the same sandals. They’re wonderful and you both have fabulous taste.

I hope you had a relaxing time on the coast. I’m hoping that going into Fall will be a little less frenetic here. :-) Sending much, much love your way!!!

    Hi Jean.
How can I follow your blog!

    • Jean on August 8, 2016 at 9:59 am

Hi Sarah! I’m embarrassed to say I don’t know! This format was created for me several years ago and I never posed that question. Maybe bookmark it and check back? I’m terminally ignorant when it comes to most forms of technology. However, I really appreciate your interest and hope to stay in touch!! xoxo

(If anyone else would like to comment on this question, I’d love the input. Thanks!!)

As an only somewhat more knowledgeable computer geek, I can tell you that I did just what you said, Jean. Bookmark the page and check it regularly.
It does help to follow you on Instagram since you typically announce when you’ve posted a new blog.
        For what it’s worth.
        I hope that helps.

Jean! So happy to see you again. You really are there experiencing the utterly lows and the upper highs of life these days. Hang on. Glad to hear your friend and Mom have made it through the latest turns.

And you frolicking with Blogger Royality. It all looks ravishingly satisfying, make that, joyous. And top it all of with a beautiful babe.

No one rocks like you, Jean. Miss ya.

    • Jean on August 10, 2016 at 7:32 pm

Oh Pao!! In the week since I posted this, my mom has had two more falls. She’s in assisted living right up the road and it’s a good place for her to be, but nevertheless, it’s a challenge. We’ve made some changes in her care this past month, but it remains a moving target. Fortunately she has extremely strong bones. Now me, on the other hand…?!! I think my bones are fine, but adrenal burnout is a constant threat.

Miss you too. I was so relieved to hear that your rehab efforts were working and that you were back to sewing. I put an extra pillow on my chair at the sewing table, hoping to avert that kind of problem. Right now I’m laying on an icepack because my back is complaining, but whatever…

YOU just made my day. xoxoxoxo
