Friday Flashback

My mantra tends to be “change is the only constant”.  To me, this makes total sense in this ephemeral existence, and helps me embrace change even when I want to go kicking and screaming in the other direction.

However, it’s interesting to look back, say thirty five years or so when these pictures were taken, and realize that some things have actually remained constant, i.e. some elements of my personal style.  For example: hats, big earrings and silver bracelets, low-slung belts, and leather jackets, among others.  As I went through some old photos, I was struck by:  a) how young I was when I thought I was old,  b) remembering how intensely critical I was of myself,  and c) how I wouldn’t trade that time for now, though I’m grateful it’s brought me here to this point.

What is a little humorous is that I’m occasionally startled that I don’t look like those photos 35 yrs and 25 lbs ago.  Like, c’mon, really?

In the same vein, I think Mother Nature has it just right when she “softens” our vision so that the so-called imperfections are not in sharp focus.  At least that’s what I tell myself.  Of course I can’t read anything either, and I’m constantly asking Joey to read things for me, since it’s too much trouble to find my glasses.  Yes, there’s a special place in heaven for him.

No, I didn’t include the photos of gigantic 80’s hair, really bad shoulder pads, and awkward poses in harem pants, but who knows?  Maybe next time!

P.S. Judith, this one’s for you!

Jean, you are as breathtakingly beautiful today as you were when these photos were taken thirty five years ago. The beautifully expressive eyes and warm smile shining beneath a stylish hat. Experience and time only deepens the transformation. Thank you for posting these photos from the past and for the mention!

    Well, well, well…..
This post is really powerful & thought-provoking. I can relate to EVERYTHING you said: the way we once were painfully critical of ourselves, in particular. Wow, now you made me think back, too!!!! I may scrap portion of this post to my blog. Will surely reveal the source, if I do.

    Hello Jean,
Your blog is so lovely and I’m so happy to be here visiting you:)). I agree Mother Nature softens our self-image, yet of course there are so many who look at those 30-year-old photos of themselves and pine for youth. It’s such a shame and I love your attitude to ageing. I’m so looking forward to reading more of your posts:)) xo

You still look great, and it’s really hard to believe that these photos were taken 35 years ago. Thanks for the inspiration!

I am agreeing with all the comments already posted. If you hadn’t said how long ago these photos were taken, I would never have guessed that they aren’t current. (Love the beret, of course!) I like the comment about softening vision. Didn’t they used to put vaseline on the camera lens in Hollywood to mimic the same thing? I would never do that!! Great post, good read.
