And the Winner Is…

April 29, 2012

Just wanted to give you a quick glimpse of what I actually wore to the Mitty Challenge.  It was hot, loud, and a lot of fun.  We wandered around, drank copious amounts of water, and Joey talked to a variety of vendors about tires, IRTB’s (Individual Runner Throttle Bodies), and a host of other things that I’m pretty much clueless about (happily so).  I was totally overdressed and I loved it.  I’ve never felt comfortable in polo shirts and jean shorts, anyway.

I wore: $5 maxi dress, cocoon top from Sim’s, cowrie shell earrings, belt, hat, bag, and cat’s eye sunglasses all thrifted, plus gladiator sandals from Ross.  (Click on the pictures for more detail.)  I have on a different (thrifted) hat in the last picture (plus H&M sunnies) because with the top down on our convertible, I can’t wear the large one; it will blow away.

This is my first outing with the larger hat.  I found it at Goodwill and immediately fell in love.  I saw a virtually identical one on Advanced Style, featuring one of my icons Beatrix Ost.  I can’t find the exact picture, but if you click on her name, you’ll see one that’s close.  I hope to find another excuse to wear it again soon.

Hope you had a great weekend!  I’ll be linking with Patti and Monday Mingle, as per usual.  Wouldn’t miss it!

Oh, I love the gigantic hat! What kind of convertible do the two of you have?

    • Jean on April 30, 2012 at 1:41 am

It’s a red Miata (can’t remember the year). We can keep the top down for a good part of the year and I love it in the evening for star gazing. Plus, when things are in bloom you can smell them. Right now there’s a lot of jasmine; it’s intoxicating.

I drive a black Miata…it’s getting pretty ancient by now, 1999.

        • Jean on April 30, 2012 at 10:37 pm

Ours is a 1995 but with lots of new parts and customization. It’s Joey’s hobby and I’m the grateful beneficiary. Is yours a convertible?

Love that cocoon top. They always look great with dresses!

    • Jean on April 30, 2012 at 1:42 am

This one is so lightweight, too. I love it and you’ll undoubtedly see it again in more posts.

Incredible! That hat is SO dynamic. I just love it. Talk about movie star glamour!! I’ll bet all those other gals who wore jeans and a t shirt were thinking, “wish I’d look at that good!”

Much love from your twin in England,

      One can only hope!

I saw many hats like this during our Fiesta celebrations last week…you look great and the hat completely goes with the look. I am going to keep my eyes open at Goodwill for hats now!!

    • Jean on April 30, 2012 at 10:47 pm

The Fiesta sounds like such a great community event! I’d love to attend some day!

Wonderful, Jean! I love a maxi and this one is so great, so flattering. I must find a hat like your *enormous* one – it’s a beauty!

    • Jean on April 30, 2012 at 11:04 pm

I can’t wait to see you in a maxi! I know you’ll rock it with style.

    An absolute queen of fashion.

I feel like I’ve been bestowed a great honor from a true monarch!

You really know how to wear a large hat and with the vintage car in the background, you are a showstopper! And I love that you had a secondary chapeau in waiting.

    • Jean on April 30, 2012 at 10:49 pm

Coming from you, that’s a huge compliment! Thank you so much.

  9. CurvyEveryday on April 30, 2012 at 9:56 pm

Seriously you look fantastic in hats! That first one is so dramatic yet understated.

    • Jean on April 30, 2012 at 10:53 pm

I’ve always loved hats but I left them alone for a number of years. I’m just now beginning to wear them again with confidence. That’s one of the reasons I love fashion blogs; they inspire me wear what I love.

Love your large hat…what a score! you wear it beautifully!

  11. Melanie on May 1, 2012 at 2:04 am

Now THAT’s a hat! Not many people could pull that off – but you do it brilliantly, without breaking a sweat!! How disappointing for some of those proud car owners that you would get more attention than their babies… Gorgeous, the whole ensemble! The vintage car in the background creates all sorts of wonderful images. Aren’t Miatas fun?!!

Someone said above ‘movie star glamour’ – and that was the phrase that ran through my head looking at the photos. The combination of gloriously dramatic big hat with the sunglasses exudes Hollywood style glamour. I’m a hat fanatic myself, but with nothing as wide-brimmed as this – yet!

  13. Sheila on May 2, 2012 at 5:42 am

Jean, you look so classy! Not everybody can wear hats and look good, but you’re definitely someone who can.

  14. catherine on May 2, 2012 at 7:45 am

and as per usual……you look marvelous. I can relate to what you said about polo shirts and shorts. I look horrible in them and they are just so “common” (do I sound snooty?)

  15. Kathleen Lisson on May 6, 2012 at 10:13 pm

This is a wonderful hat. I like the pop of color.
