Advanced Style

Last night there was a party in New York, one that I would have loved to attend.  It was held at the New Museum, celebrating the launch of Ari Seth Cohen’s book Advanced Style.  A few years ago, I stumbled on Ari’s blog called Advanced Style.  I was immediately enamored with the wonderful photos of extraordinary so-called seniors.  Ari’s contention is that style only advances with age. His images of these vibrant men and women, and his obvious admiration for them, are inspiring, particularly when most style images focus on the very young.

His blog (and now book) is a loving testament to the enduring beauty of people as they age.  It encourages us to embrace our personal style fearlessly whatever it may be, to celebrate who we are, and to wear what we love as an artistic manifestation of our spirit.  This is potent medicine and has inspired many, myself included.  I realize that at 59, I’m only a style fledgling!  It’s also because of Advanced Style that I met the remarkable Style Crone aka Judith Boyd who is featured in the book.

So thank you Ari and all the other folks who make Advanced Style so amazing!  Even though I couldn’t attend last night, I was there in spirit and I’m getting my book today.  Congratulations.

As a tribute, I’m posting some of my favorite Advanced Style folk.  Picture 1) My kindred style spirit, Laura,   2) Joey’s mom (left) and Mrs. Jackson, true Advanced Style ladies,  and  3) The Style Crone

Last but not least, Joey and Mr. Morehead, looking casually cool on his 90th birthday

Great post!! I would have loved to go to Ari’s signing too. I’ve been following for quite some time and it’s been so exciting watching and reading waiting for his book to become available. His blog is such an amazing inspiration. I can remember the first time I landed on it thinking to myself, “Hey, I don’t have to get bored with clothing just because I’m aging. I can keep having fun!” It really changed something inside of me.

I have to say the same. It really had an impact on me and provided impetus for a lot of change, including starting this blog.

Yes, I echo everything I’ve read here. I think my jaw dropped the first time I dropped by Advanced Style. There’s so much to embrace in our daily evolution – soon here will be there. Thanks for sharing these photos of these wonderfully stylish women (you and Judith included) and Mr. Morehead on his big nine-oh! Congratulations! Lookin’ good!

What a fantastic time you must have had amongst all those other gorgeous people! That picture of yourself and Judith is just lovely. I must get myself that book. x

I wish I could have been there! The pics are of some of my favorite Advanced Style folks closer to home! (I think I’m going to amend my post to be clear :-))

Great post. I adore Ari’s blog, the ladies he portrays and features are so inspirational.

I’m a great fan of his blog too. Right up until she was 92, my great-grandma was an epitome of ‘advanced style’. Sadly, at 94 now, dementia has robbed her of awareness of what she’s wearing in the present, though she can still recall in vivid detail what she made and wore during World War 2.

Have to agree with you Jean, Ari has done such a service to so many of us, allowing us to really “blossom”! It was through Advanced Style that I found our mutual friend Judith, the Style Crone, and from there, many other fabulous blogs.

Many thanks for your comments on my blog too.

    Much love from England,
    Rose

I love browsing Advanced Style! Nothing says you have to loose style with age. Congrats to Ari and his book.

I received my copy today and like you wished that I could have been at the kick-off party to have all the lovely photographs autographed! You’re right that the book is an inspiration…and not much makes me feel like a “babe in the woods,” but this book does, stylewise!

Jean, thank you for including The SC in the company of your amazing personal Advanced Style folk. A true honor. As you state, Ari has inspired so many of us to be who we are, which is a priceless gift as we age. To see people living life to the fullest in their 90’s (as evidenced by the cool Mr. Morehead) helps me realize that we have limitless possibilities.

I have fond memories of the day that we met, which is almost a year ago now. Since then you’ve launched Dross, influencing others with your style, artistry and passion. Brava!

Jean, I got my book yesterday and my two girls can’t stop looking at it! My 14 year old said, “I want to be an older stylish lady!” This book is groundbreaking really, because we get to see FOR ONCE! how beautiful aging can be over and over again. Every page is amazing, I love it!

I have been following Ari’s blog for some time now, and just received my copy of the book this week. I would have just loved to have been able to attend the launch party too! His blog has completely changed my view of aging, and what is possible at 70, 80, and beyond (Mr. Morehead looks great).
The blog has also facilitated connections with such wonderful women as Judith (StyleCrone) and Jean and Valerie (the Idiosyncratic Fashionistas).
